Re: Median: Serenity Prayer: Rebloom

From: "Mark, Maureen" <MARKM@tc.gc.ca>

Hi Mike & Perry,

We were talking to Chuck Chapman about rebloom and continuous bloomers. His
theory is that there are two separate genetic traits. The classic one is a
gene that will allow rebloom in the fall. This is triggered by a number of
factors including water, fertilizer and who knows what else. The other
trait is the ability to bloom again once the rhizome reaches a certain size.
He has noted that a number of seedlings and cultivars that exhibit
exceptional vigor will "repeat" bloom a few times each season. He noted
that FOREVER BLUE belongs to this class. However, he has found that these
need to be divided more often -- every year or two.

It should follow that crossing irises with these two different traits could
result in a small number of them being continuous bloomers. We'll probably
see the results of Chuck's attempts in a year or two.

Mike, what proportion of your crosses produce continuous bloomers? Are you
working on medians too?
