Re: HYB-seed germination questions

From: "S&C Rust" <srust@fidnet.com>

Walter, Stephanie starts all of her iris seeds (of any kind) in pots. She
likes to use cactus soil (good drainage) and then tops off the pots with
about an inch of soil. She has incredible germination (we are wildly
looking around for where this new batch of seedlings will go!) and she never
has any soil splash, because of the sand; which does double duty to prevent
any heaving of the soil in the pot over winter freezing and thawing. It
also cuts down on watering chores in the spring/summer. Stephanie sinks
these pots to within about a quarter of an inch of the rim sticking out of
the ground. We never leave them above ground. She does this in late
October to November, and then we lightly mulch around and between pots with
shredded bark, but not over the top of the pots, the sand is sufficient.
Keith Keppel is the one who told her to use sand as mulch over the winter,
and his advise has been good as gold. We mulch every clump and rhizome over
the winter with sand and have much less rot, and no more orange rhizomes!
