Welcome Amoret,
Your irises should be fine. In sandy soil, you can bury the rhizome up to
an inch.
You'll find iris folks more than willing to share their irises at division
time, particularly with a newbie. Join a local club. Join the American
Iris Society. Browse the AIS website. It also has links to many other
sites with lots of info.
Most of all have fun. Ask questions. Share your experiences. We get
vicarious pleasure when others rave about their first bloom, first
seedling...
Before you go to the library, search the archives
http://www.mallorn.com/lists/iris-talk/ for references to books. There are
a few new ones. If you have a bit of money, two inexpensive books are
offered by the AIS, its own reference book The World of Iris and William
Shear's (of this list) The Gardener's Iris Book.
