That's just the cat's way of telling you it would rather be outdoors. I
think one of the reasons I have abandoned the social companionship of
birdwatchers for that of irisarians is that birdwatchers have such a low
opinion of cats, whereas irisarians realize there is no better companion
while doing the drudgery of weeding than having a cat's paw appear through
the fan in a playful swat. Useful predators of meadow voles, and willing
fertilizer of freshly cultivated and weeded soil, I think it is no
coincidence that so many growers of iris and other things are including
photos of their cats in their catalogs.
I have long observed that cats and dogs both have personalities that tend
to reflect that of their human, and if birdwatchers feel that cats are
heartless predators, that tells me something about them.
(For the record, my cat is lovable and well adjusted, greets most garden
visitors - when not engaged in his required 20 hours of sleep per day - and
fellow irisarians by presenting his head for a rub, and usually accepts
them totally by rolling on his back and daring them to pet his belly.). In
my one man, one cat operation, he carries the title of Operations
Supervisor. Of course, photos will be available on my web site soon.
