Many thanks to Cindy, Leslie, James, Rosalie, Maureen and
Anner for their hearty welcomes to the list and their specific information
regarding my iris. Since I am now informed that several of my new
acquisitions are in fact historics, I have returned to my lady friend who grew
them to see what else she has. Indeed she is a treasure trove of sorts,
with another 50 or so named varieties, many of which appear to be oldies.
Anner, being the HIPS source chair, I thought you might be interested to know
what she's growing, in case any of them are rare enough to be in demand.
Yours or anyone's comments on the following would certainly be
welcome:
ALASKA, ANGEL BRIGHT, APRICOT BLAZE, APRICOT LUSTRE, BABBLING
BROOK, BELLE MEADE, BERTHA PERKINS, BRONZE BELL, CAMELOT ROSE, CHAPEAU, CIRCUS
STRIPE, CRINKLED JOY, DOT & DASH, ELEANOR'S PRIDE, ETCHED BURGUNDY, GALILEE,
GRAND SPECTATOR, HARVEST TIME, HEARTBREAKER, HIGH FASHION, HOWDY FOLKS,
INVESTIGATOR, JEALOUSY, JOYCE TERRY, MEET THE BOSS, PARIS LIGHTS, PINK FEATURES,
PINK PALACE, PIPES OF PAN, RAGE, REPARTEE, RIBBON ROUND, RICH RED, ROYAL TROPHY,
SAMURI WARRIOR, SKYWATCH, SOCIAL BUTTERFLY, SUN GOLD, SUN SPRAY, TEMPLE GOLD,
TIBRIRON, SHADOW MAGIC, TYROLEAN BLUE, UTAH VALLEY, WARNING CLOUD, WHITE
TAFFETA, WILD GINGER, WIND RIVER.
She's a charming grayed widow in her late 70's, with gnarled
up hands and a pick-up truck to keep her in business, and a flock of sheep
("I feed them, they feed the flowers.") If she's not home you
wander her gardens and leave a note in an old rusty box telling her which
rhizomes you want in July when she digs them--"they need to rest for awhile
first" she says. I'm not sure how accurate her ID or spelling
is; so far the ones I've checked against the info you folks gave me indeed
look like their official descriptions.
I am new to this business of named varieties and how to ID
them--not sure how to come by those magic checklists you all refer to, other
then join AIS, which I just recently did. Any info anyone can share, or a
nudge in the right direction to find it myself, would be much appreciated.
Again, I thank you all for your willingness to share your time
and knowledge--
