Hi, Everyone,
I'm Karen von Bargen and I have been lurking in the shadows for a while and have finally
gotten the backbone up to ask a couple of questions. First of all, I'm in charge of landscaping
at our condo complex and want to use iris because they can survive our spotty attention and deer
attacks. The motivation for this is I got a bunch of iris at a club sale last year, planted them
at my folks house, and have been floored with the results! My goal for the last ten years has
been to plant a great garden for my mother who likes beauty but has mobility problems. I
succeeded! Our favorite is one called Rock Star.
Now here are my questions: I have been fortunate enough to come from a long line of garderners
and have iris from my grandmother. These grow rampant in the local cemeteries and I would call
them dutch iris, but aren't dutch iris some sort of bulb and not a rhizome? If they look like
the 'dutch iris' that are sold as cut flowers but the foliage doesn't die down after bloom, what
are they?
We have had a, uh, midsized (median?), bearded iris for an eon and now have it everywhere. I
vaguely remember it being called a Paul Scarlet, but my mom says it's the name of a rose her
grandmother grew and I'm nuts and it's a King Crimson. It's all very dark purple with a yellow
beard and has to be at least 20 years old. Where would I be able to go to look something like
that up?
I have also volunteered to put in a garden at a local historical building and want to do
something period, including lots of iris. Does anyone have any suggestions for where I could go
to look for some information about what else I could put in? I got my degree in horticulture but
we didn't cover this!
So, there you have it!
