I live in auckland N.Z. I've been hybridising JI's and a few SIB's for
about 8 years. They were housed in poly bags on marginal shelves
of ponds on a south facing clay site, but have just moved to North
facing volcanoc soil site. A lot more sun and heat stress.
The parent stock i've used are various mainly USA bred JI's and a
lot of bee pods.
I'm currently accessioning all eight years woprth of random and
planned crosses into a database to find out what ive really got.
I grow the JI's in a mix of peat, sieved soil, sand, palm peat
[compressed coconut fibre] and clay placed at the bottom of the
poly bag to stop the nutrients/fertiliser leaching out too fast.
I get a lot of flowers from mid Nov. to Jan. and sporadic blooming
on through till May [this year] or June[ 98].
I use the JI's in a pond setting and am breeding for height among
other things. A recent big 6 falls blue double at 1.7 metres and
good substance is the best.
I thought I was breeding for blues in particular, but I have got some
new hard lilac/grey 6 fall sanded and veined that look interesting.
Current project a] digging pond number 4 and b] being more
selective about what I keep [more compost].
