Robin,
I buy my iris from the local society. They have their annual sale listed in
the garden section of the newspaper when the time rolls around for it. You
might try looking around to see if there is any mention in your local papers
(or a city paper of a city near you) that lists gardening events. I know
this really will not help you this year, but it may next. I figure that
locally grown iris have a better chance of surviving local conditions than
something I might order from some place, plus, I am helping support the
organization (of which I am not a member). Of course, surviving my
gardening practices adds a whole new set of challenges to the iris, but I
think that is a bit out of the scope of discussion here <g>.
Also, when you are driving here and there, be on the lookout for iris
growing. If you see some you like when they bloom, perhaps stopping and
speaking with the owner of the property may yield a few varieties you like.
Hopefully, they may even know what they are. I've not done this with iris,
but have for other plants, and it has worked out well. I offer to trade for
something I am growing that I have an excess of. Sometimes they take it,
sometimes they just give.
An interesting sidelight here. I was at the local Home Depot one time
looking for some gardening implements of destruction (at least in my hands
they can be implements of destruction), and was grumbling about the poor
quality of what I was seeing, and the lack of some things I really wanted to
have. An older gentleman overheard my mumbling, had me follow him to his
house, and gave me a whole bunch of tools. Wouldn't accept a thing for them
either. Turns out his wife was not doing well, and he could not keep up
with the wonderful yard and gardens they had by himself, as well as the
house, and they were selling to go into an assisted living community. He
pretty much filled out what I needed, and then some, and I am very grateful
to him and wish him well.

Is there a list of Iris that are fairly reliable into zone 4? I had
tried to order from a farm in our zone, but sent the order and got no
response (though to be fair, she didn't cash the check) Now I've got
to wait a whole season to get anything besides Immortality.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Robin
