Sorry to hear about this Laurie ;-(
I guess the local deer population has learned to seek refuge on your
farm when hunting season starts. I'd guess that maybe a new arrival
decided that your irises were palatable and assumed that your beds were
an open salad bar. I hope your losses are not great come next Spring.
In your climate, an iris that gets pulled out of the ground is probably
a goner but hopefully his didn't happen.
A similar thing happened to my rows of Corn, every plant was completely
devoured to our utter dismay. Now I know I won't be able to grow it.
Somebody also took a bite out of every cucumber I had except one but at
least no animal has shown the slightest interest in the irises yet
(touch wood ).
