RE: OT: VIRUS FOUND

This is not a virus. Everyone who runs a version of Windows 95 or above
will find this file on their machines. It is not a critical file, so
deleting it will do no real harm, unless, for some reason you need to
restore long file names. However, it may become infected by some viruses,
most commonly a variant of the MAGISTR virus. It is unwise to follow such
information passed along via e-mail. Your best protection against virus
infection is to use a good anti-virus program and keep the virus definitions
updated. Personally, and in my business, I recommend the McAfee Anti-Virus
from NAI and the PC-Cillin from Trend-Micro. NAI releases updates once a
week, more often, if necessary, and Trend-Micro will automatically check for
new updates whenever you are online, and ask if you wish to download them.
I run both at home, on different machines.

For those of you who currently do not have an anti-virus program, you might
wish to run the online checker known as House Call offered by Trend-Micro at
http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/. You can skip the leaving of your
e-mail address, and just leave the country you live in during the
registration process--these are the only two things that are asked during
registration. The first time you run this program, it will take some time
to set up, after that, it is not too bad. I run it on occasion as a backup
check.

Whenever you receive an e-mail warning of a virus, or with instructions to
remove a purported virus, you can be almost certain that it is a hoax. If
you wish to check the validity of it, there are a number of places to check.
I use the NAI Virus Information Library first
(http://vil.nai.com/vil/default.asp), then follow-up with a search of the
Symantec offering, and, then, possibly any one of the numerous hoax sites
available on the 'net (you can contact me off list for some of the URL's I
use).

Some of you may question why I have not mentioned the Norton Anti-Virus
program here. Well, truthfully, I've found it to cause a lot more problems
than either of the two I did recommend combined. When I have run into a
problem diagnosing a problem with a PC, and the Norton anti-virus was
installed, removing it cured the problem, to the point where when I am faced
with a PC having a problem that had Norton installed, I just removed it, and
then proceeded to troubleshooting if the problem still existed, which it
usually didn't. It cut down on my workload considerably. I am given to
understand that the latest version is less problematic, but I have not had
any experience with it, and, until I do, I will withhold any recommendation
of it's use. Should you like to try it, feel free, but it is not on my list
of recommended products.

I do mostly Network Administration for a number of clients, and do work on
individual PC's as part of my job. I work for a firm called LAN Doctor, Inc
(http://www.landoctor.com) in Fairfax, VA.

We no return you to talk of iris. I'll post the two rebloomers I've had
later today--a poor year for rebloom for me here in Northern Virginia.

A friend wrote me about this virus. I did find it on my computer and
destroyed it. Directions below on how to do it. It is easy, but once you
locate it, DO NOT OPEN IT.

Dear Friend,

A REAL LIVE VIRUS, "SULFNBK.EXE," IS PROBABLY IN YOUR COMPUTER.

I just received this virus warning and checked to find that IT IS IN MY
COMPUTER. As best as I can tell I received it around 10/23/2001. The
likelyhood is high that now it is in your computer also looming in the
background waiting to become effective and do damage.

Please read about in the following e-mail, then follow the simple
instructions to destroy it.
If your computer was infected, you may have infected others with your
e-mails. Please send this to everyone and anyone you may have sent
e-mail to since 10/23/2001.
