Here's an idea that might or might not work, depending on how
hard it is to find good used camera stores in your area and
what their prices are.
Find a used 35mm camera that allows or even requires manual
focussing, shows the focus quality in the viewfinder, and uses
a detachable lens. I've been using a Pentax K1000 for around
10 years. It was about the cheapest of this type when I bought
it, but it later became popular for training professional
photographers and therefore stayed in production longer than
many available then. Get a regular lens, a closeup lens, or both
to go with it. Note that using lens with a wide opening allows
using a small f-stop so you can make the iris in focus but not
other objects in the background.
Choose PhotoWorks as your film developer (see their web
site at www.photoworks.com for details). Try both their film
and some Kodak film (they develop both) until you find a good
choice of film type. Choose their High-Resolution E-Sharing
option or their Pictures On Disk option to get the film scanned
for you. Note that since they scan before cutting up the film,
they can do it at a lower price than other places charge for
scanning the same number of pictures after the film is cut up,
but they limit the choices to scanning the whole roll before you
see it or no scanning at all. Their main location in Seattle
probably still handles some of the developing, although I've
switched to using their Wilmington, Delaware location instead.
I'll have to pin down the last piece of this before I start posting
pictures on iris-photos, though; I haven't found a good piece of
software for converting the scan files from PhotoWorks into
graphics files standard enough that most people on that
mailing list can see them.
