Re: HYB: Clara Ellen or...

Dear Sandy,
I have not had any iris seed set for me but with my daylily seeds I find they do great sitting right in a West facing window. In the winter the glass is cool enough not to cook the young plants and they love the strong sunlight. The first two years I started them from seed this is where I placed all of my seedlings. My one window is in the basement where it tends to stay pretty cool anyway, about 63 degrees year around. I have found everything placed on the floor dies. I always put things up at least 3" off the concrete.

Just when you got the garden to bed and you think you can curl up with
  the newest Tempo Two catalogue...

All of the beds are put away as of today. I am cleaning up the driveway
(because if I don't, I won't have space to park the car for all the
  snow).

Flush up against the foundations and behind a bunch of transplanting
pots I find what had been old bag of potting soil with a label
indicating a self cross of Clara Ellen (Jenkins '93 - a modern spuria)
  from last year.

The seeds think it's April, more fool them. There must be at least
thirty seedlings about an inch tall. (*&%^*&$(^*%!

I'll have to bring them in; they aren't far enough along to make it
through the winter even with protection.

Of course you know, this means war. With Maureen's african violets who
are currently residing in MY hydroponics unit. The annoying aspect of
the whole matter? It's her cross!

I'm not sure what to expect from the cross. The pollen parent is
unknown. We'll be considering this a foliage plant for at least three
  years. Any thoughts?

  Regards,

Sandy Ives in Ottawa (z4bish who declares his bloom season over as of
to... WHAT'S THAT BLOOM DOING ON PRECIOUS LITTLE PINK!)
