Walter,
"Bee and her cronies" constituted the Median Iris Society Genetics Panel,
which in 1972 after a three-year study defined a "genetically reproducible
anthocyanin pattern having its pigment present in an irregular marbling in
the central area of the petals and absent in the peripheral areas, the
marbling effect being produced by non-anthcyanin veining (white or
carotenoid) with no anthocyanin in the hafts, stylearms or beards." The
name luminata was chosen for this pattern to reflect the pale or "lighted"
effect in the heart of the flower.
