OT: weather

Hi Jan, Wendy and all other Australians

How are you faring in this horrible weather. We still have (had) a lot of bloom, especially in the late transplant area, but the cold winds over the last few days have downed a lot of our spikes with 3 or more blooms out. This is especially so in the new transplant area where the roots aren't yet firmly achoring the plants.
I was so disappointed because the weather forcast was suggesting a week of fine warm weather, then, whoom, the high gets pushed out of the way and back to cold and showery, while it's supposed to moderate over the next few days, back to cold and windy for the weekend, yuck. It's also keeping the number of visitors to the garden down, not good for business.
However the cool weather is certainly extended the TB bloom season, I reckon we'll still have good bloom until early December. some of my late ones yet to show colour are Whispering, Norma Jean, Horotio, Nortorious and Hostess Royal. The daylilies are trying to open but the coldness of the weather is still affecting the colour, especially of the reds.
The spurias are looking great and also the La, albeit short from the wind.
One advantage of the cold weather is thar the take rate on pod set has been very high, and even if the stalk goes over, they still develop unless totally snapped off. Walking around the rows requires a lot of careful negotiation of horizontal and leaning bloom stalks.
Some varieties have stood the weather partic well. Barry Blyth has always said Hot Gossip withstands rough weather well, and he is right, it's been well tested this year. The very heavy substance on Rapture In Blue, means it is also lasting well. The dark colours are not doing so well, , the sun is still at November strenght and so later flowering means that they are being cooked on fine days.
Epicentre has certainly suffered, I haven't been able to set asingle pod on it this year, but it has produced good pollen. I find it an excellent parent for dark ruby reds.
