TB:REB:Old news

Spending the day rearranging my office. Ran into old copies of the Recorder
and couldn't resist glancing through one of the earlier ones. Early for me
that is. This was the issue for Spring 1987 and it reported the Tall Bearded
Reblooming Symposium for the Fall of 1986. Here are the top ten!

1. CORN HARVEST
2. EARL OF ESSEX
3. IMMORTALITY
4. QUEEN DOROTHY
5. CAYENNE CAPERS
6. BELVI QUEEN
7. SUMMER OLYMPICS
8. SPIRIT OF MEMPHIS
9. SIGN OF LEO
10. GOLDEN ENCORE

Robin Feathers compiled by Bernice Miller of Alabama reflected excerpts from
Sue & Jim Keefe, Dudley Carson, Happy Tupling, Estelle Trammell, Jim Ennenga,
Lloy Zurbrigg, Gary Sides, Ben Watson, Monty Byers, Carol Jensen, Don
Morrison, Horace Wright, Earl Hall, Wilmer D. Swope, Bob Madden, John L.
Chambers, Lottie Ogles, and Raymond G. Smith.

Monty Byers . . . "Sky Hooks has thrown a lot of rebloomers here, but I've
never heard of it actually reblooming exept for Joe Ghio. Approximately 1/3
of all TBs that are introduced will rebloom for him." And . . . "I have
believed right from the start that iris that have the ability to rebloom or
even release out of season stalks can throw a much stronger will to rebloom
than they themselves possess."

Linda M., you may be interested in the words of Gary Sides . . .

Gary Sides . . . " I planted my seeds in large cans (commercial cafe size) on
the 4th and 11th of Nov. in a soil mixture of 1 part sand, 1 part garden loam
and 3 parts potting soil. It makes quite a friable mixture that seems to
increase the percentage of germination. They were covered with pine straw
and then plastic. On the 15th of Feb., I found 7 crosses already germinating.
I removed the pine straw and replaced the hoops that hold the plastic and
started my heating cables. By the end of March the amount of germination was
amazing. I like to get my seedlings up early and hardened off and set out as
the spring warms up. That way I have much more growth on my seedlings than
if I wait to let Mother Nature sprout them, and set them out when they reach
transplanting time. "

Hope you enjoy this peak into the past.
