I have viewed this forum on and off for a few years now. Many times - - it
has been helpful as well as informative. I am always so pleased to see
well-known hybridizers, known hybridizers, and up and coming hybridizers share
their wisdom, knowledge, and expertise. Granted, there is much we learn
through experience only, and by one-to-one contact with someone who is much
further along than we are. However, the use of a verbal forum (such as this
one) can teach us in a wider measure because of such a wide diversity of
thought and acquired knowledge. Many of us are "still in school" and need the
thoughtful guidance and direction from "teachers". both here and in the
field.
Yesterday, at our Hybridizers meeting, (I.H.A.) held in Arizona (which
actually first met in November of 2001) - - was a shot in the arm to all of us
involved. Usually there is teaching involved - much like a seminar, but this
meeting we kept it pretty simple. There were 11 of us that showed up. Carol
Crosswhite showed us pictures of many of her new Arilbreds, Charles Jenkins -
slides of his new Spurias, and a few more of us with our new TB's. It was
really interesting! Some real stunning iris should be introduced within the
next 3 years or so.
At this point I'd like to encourage all who are interested in hybridizng to
form a club, such as this. It was a concept that both Jan and myself (at the
time) decided to take on. And it's not that involved. We found a city that
was mid-point in the state where all the hybridizers would need to travel only
half of a distance to get there. Library rooms are free to use for meetings
/so are some restaurant rooms. Then ask for donations to use as door prizes
and set an agenda. We all keep in touch for events such as this through
E-mail.
Yesterday we shared stories and experiences as well as photos. Mine was when
someone (this past spring) stole my latest crosses on my new seedling TB lines
I have established and worked hard on for the past 5 years. Now someone not
only has my lines, but also next years seedlings from those crosses. In the
past we've had Rick Tasco and Roger from superstitions join us for a "Question
and Answer" period.
I think many of us hybridizers, to one degree or another, need the
encouragement, the feedback, the knowledge, and friendship from those who are
like-minded. I am so thankful to everyone in my life that has guided me in
one direction or another. This forum included, as well as Iris -Photos.
