LADY EMMA is a reliable rebloomer here (zone 7, western NC) but this year with
all the clouds, rain and wierd weather simply went dormant when the weather
warmed up and dried out (sorta).
Now, however, she decides to put up bloomstalks. We have not yet had a frost
in the warmest area of the garden with very tender impatiens still gloriously
blooming. The main clump of Lady Emma is just emerging from dormancy, but a
sprig planted about forty feet away from our house and about ten feet from one
of the rental apartments is sending up very short but real bloomstalks. This
plant did not retreat into as deep a dormancy as the main one which I allowed
to get too dry for about a week in midsummer.
I had been under the impression that the genetics that keep this kind of
dormancy from happening was one of the characteristics all rebloomers shared.
Guess that isn't true--at least not always.
