Re: RE: AIS: Irisregister.com

Hi Ellen, you bring up a good point that makes one think a bit more on the
subject.

There is such a huge difference between what can be done, what is being
done, and what is planned to be done.

We can always fantasize and dream of the day that the AIS registration
record maintained by the Registrar is on the internet and that real time
viewing of the current record can be researched. Actually being able to see
information on a cultivar that was registered and entered into the official
Registrar's record this morning would be dandy. This could be done, but
probably will not be done.

It is nice to see what is currently being done in that the checklists are
being made available on the internet as the data is transferred into the
format that John J. has prepared. This information is useful and is a
worthy endeavor that many will enjoy, and many have already enjoyed. I have
heard discussions asking if this data will become the basis for the official
Registrar's record, thus validating the project to be as valid as the
printed checklists. Others have voiced that if another database is
maintained by the Registrar then the current online registration information
is simply an excellent tool, but not a viable resource when it comes to
exhibitions, and that it may contain errors.

What is planned to be done? I haven't a clue. Is there a long range plan
for the online registration database? Will it be a temporary resource until
a new Registrar's database is established? Will the current online database
be the foundation to build a Registrar's database? Is a CD of the checklist
information something that is being planned by the Directors of AIS? What
are the priority of tasks and goals? What is expected at each checkpoint
along the way to the final goal? What is the final goal? What plans and
goals are already established and how will they be measured and evaluated?
Is there funding available to meet the established goals?

Ellen, you wondered why a 10 year subscription to the online database would
negate a CD version. My first thought would be if a CD were planned, would
it take 10 years before it was available? If a CD were available, I would
assume (oh my!!), it would become the primary product chosen by iris folks
when it came to choosing the online version and the CD version. Is it a
viable option to have both a CD product and an online record of the same
material that each charge a fee? Again, everyone plans and thinks
differently. Why would you sell a 10 year subscription to an online product
if you knew you would develop a CD product within the next 5 years that was
identical to it.

Discussions like this are great. I am glad it has been brought up. O.K.
this letter has a bunch of what-ifs and many questions, however, I will add
a personal note since I have not mentioned my own opinions yet. If I had a
vote then I would probably make the online database available indefinitely
(or as long as it exists) for free to life time members of the Society.
BTW... we just renewed our membership for two years so I would not qualify
for the freebie.

Happy Veteran's Day

Bobby
