I always liked the different colored veins and tints on shoulders, or
outside edges of the upper haft. I thought that was the part of the
fall people were talking about when they talked about haft veining.
I like shoulder veining, especially when it is a different color, wide,
and dramatic, as on some of the older varieties.
But I don't much care for all the busy mess of haft lines in the middle
of the fall on so many newer varieties. It detracts from the overall
beauty on a lot of them. If the lines don't extend all the way to the
end of the beard, it doesn't bother me as much.
On the other hand, sometimes the veins enhance the whole garden effect
of the bloom from a distance.
ANYTHING GOES is another name of a very busy one.
Betty, I take it haft marks are hard to breed out? I have an otherwise
really nice garden impact weedy seedling that I wasn't going to try to
take farther because the haft marks are so conspicuous - if I cross it
with something with clean hafts, do I have a chance to get rid of them?
