Kitty, that was delicately written.
While the topic of insurance is a valid one for the convention, I think the subsequent concentration on the insurance question does not advance your admirable goals. There are very specific problems that have been discussed in previous years in this forum and others; I absolutely will not kick that particular cat unless someone suitably fortifies me with liquid painkillers (so, who's buying).
That being said...
There was one simple reason why I didn't join TBIS. It cost too much. District 16 of the AIS was considered international. Still is.
Annual membership for me/my household is 25 USD, that translates into almost 50 CAD once the financial charges were settled. Each year. No triennial memberships allowed. The American triennial membership is 27 USD.
I made representations to TBIS concerning this issue at the last AIS convention they participated in - if only to try to get obtain an international triennial membership. This was not addressed at that meeting or at any subsequent ones, despite a promising private conversation. I have posed this problem to various TBIS directors each year. I know it's more expensive to mail materials to Canada, but this stuff isn't re-engineering the human genome. Add a mailing surcharge - that's what the AHS does.
There are multiple reasons why I wish I could join TBIS. The magazine is outstanding - the articles are generally interesting, the advertising is attractive, and the opportunities for obtaining outstanding introductions at excellent prices are mouth-watering. I get it from friends whenever possible. And that's just the magazine.
So... the positive change that will get my attention is having TBIS remedy my specific gripe, or at least respond to it.
Best regards,
Sandy Ives in Ottawa (who's now in the mood for Wister threads)
