well, you are right, the promotions will tend to lead the newbie irisarian
in the direction of TB's, but I think it may be a bit of the cart before the
horse to suggest that AIS is intentionally only backing TBs.
Let's face it, the lion's share of us knew about TB's before we knew about
any other iris, and that was probably a lifetime before we ever heard of
AIS, Cooleys, or Schreiner's. What draws people into irising is the "I
didn't know they did that!" phenomenon. For me I thought iris came in
about five different colors. The yellows were ok, some of the purples were
really pretty (I'm partial to purple in general), but you could not pay me
to take one of those ones that had the brown bottoms. Then one day, there
was a blurb on the news about a show, and I went, and heard a rumor about a
catalog...
It can't be as simple as growability either, because there are plenty of
crazy nutzo-s with any ol orchid they can get their hands on, and as I
understand it those things are nowhere near easy to grow.
The advertisements being run in AIS publications reflect what is growing in
the garden of the guy who bought the advertising space. And he is
advertising as a means of trying to keep his iris healthy, by dividing them,
and maybe make some money on the side. Now I'm not saying that there aren't
growers who are trying to make a profit, but I doubt the profit was what
motivated him to start growing iris in the first place. There's too much of
his potential for profit being tossed onto the compost heap for that to make
any sense.
If there aren't enough articles about non TBs it's prolly cause all you
'shorter' versions are out there trying to make something that will have the
appeal of the TB. The articles that are being written are quite naturally
being based around what is happening in the gardens the writers 'hear' about
and can afford to get to...
