I think it might be because the name shows up in the lineage of all those
irises that are pulled up. At least that's what I use it for, sometimes.
Type in a name, see what irises have it in their parentage.

I know what you mean, I also spend all my days on the computer.  I have
encountered somewhat the same problems you have.  I will come across a name
that brings up huge chunks of the list.  However, if I move on to another
name the search works fine.  One of these times I am going to do so research
when one of those names brings up huge chunks and see if I can find a link
to why it is pulling up all those files.
I have used the name database and the checklist database extensively,
although I own all the R&I's and checklists, I love being able to access
them on line as well.  They may not be perfect but they are wonderful!!
