Very few characteristics are dependent on which parent is pod, which is
pollen. For the most part, the difference can be ignored if you are talking
about ordinary bearded irises.
Making crosses both ways between two parents is a good way to learn if any
significant difference exists.
Any flaws tend to show up strongly in offspring. Branching, budcount,
substance, haft width, form all matter a lot. Colors are unpredictble to a
large extent. Like tends to breed like, but a lot of suprises can happen.
The genetics of bearded iris color is complex.
One good way to learn is to get a copy of The World of Irises edited by Bea
Warburton and Melba Hamblen. This is currently priced at $15 from the
