Re: HYB: parents

I was hoping you would comment on this one Neil.

Adding to what you said, it's interesting that Hager, who hybridized in
iris heaven, saw no difference in which way the cross was made, but
hybridizers in iris-purgatory told Betty there is a big difference.

Maybe all the seedlings that would have made it look like no difference
die in our climate....

<If> vegetative characteristics such as disease tolerance, ability to
tolerate our difficult climate, especially in the southern vale of iris
despair, comes from the mother, that's important to know <if> you are
hybridizing irises for this area.

Much less important in iris heaven.

I've been making crosses on the assumption that the mother <does> pass
on those traits. Not because of any great knowledge or wisdom - the
super healthy disease/climate tolerant ones are usually the only ones
that will carry pods to maturity here.

Speaking of climate tolerant, after several light freezes, the tomatos
are almost burnt to the ground, most of the iris that are still opening
blooms are damaged (losing body parts, blasted anthers, deformed petals,
creped, bleached, etc) but HARVEST OF MEMORIES keeps on opening normal
blooms. And a normal looking bloom opened on BELVI QUEEN today, after a
bout of messed up blooms.

Fortunately, Lloyd's tough rebloomers seem to pass on good branching and
bud count. Or at least sometimes they do. Seems to be all or nothing.

Three more seedlings have stalks, one or two junky ones (low bud count,
small narrow flowers, short, boring selfs) with buds showing color, one
nice looking one that is barely out of the fan.
