There are many stories about Ben Hager, but this is my favorite. The occasion
was a Spring Regional of Region 14 at Redding, California. At an evening get
together in one of the hotel rooms Carol Vossen, a breeder of arilbreds, asked
Ben if he remembered the first time she met him. Ben said he did not and
Carol told this story.
It seems that Carol had just gotten started in iris and knew about Ben and
about Melrose Gardens. She happened to be traveling through Stockton and
although it was fall and plant-back time she decided to stop at the garden and meet
Ben. Upon arriving at the garden she saw Ben in the middle of a field and
rushed up to him and introduced herself and the first question she asked was how
should an iris be planted. Ben looked at her with one eye brow raised, reached
down and picked up a rhizome. He then kicked a hole in the soil, dropped the
rhizome into the hole, stomped it with his foot and said, "There. It's planted."
After Carol told the story she said, "Ben, do you remember that?"
Ben said, "No, I don't." After a slight pause he said, "But it sounds like
me!"
