Steve, I'm in zone 6B, so what works for me might not work for you. But I
will tell you my experiences and you might be able to adapt some things for
your location.
My seedlings are all planted in mum pots, approx 25 to the pot, and left
outside to germinate. They sprout around April 1. I water with miracle grow
until planting time.
1) Plant as early as possible. Anything past the end of TB bloom season may
not bloom the next year.
2) Push the seedlings as much as possible. Water deep on a regular basis,
every 10 days to 2 weeks. I use one soaker hose for every two rows.
3) Feed the seedlings with miracle grow. I use an in-line container, but
keep a watch on leaks as too much can cause rot.
Good growth by the end of the growing season will usually give good spring
bloom.
In 2004 several seedlings planted in May bloomed in Oct & Nov.
This summer's seedlings were NOT pushed. High heat and humidity were a
problem. Still, five seedlings, planted in May and June, put up stalks toward
the end of the season. They were given enough water, early in the day with
soaker hoses, to keep them alive, but not much more until Mother Nature kicked
in. Plants are looking good and I'll be curious to see how much bloom I get.
My seedlings are heavy on rebloom.
Planting late usually means no bloom the first year for me.
