Re: RE: 2005 germinants

Every year's germination seems to be different here. Probably some of
the difference has to do with how wet the burrito's are - they need to
be damp, but not wet. I soak the paper towel, wrap up the seeds, then
squeeze out excess water. This year, the second batch of seeds out of
the toilet tank went into one giant burrito - wrapped the whole wad of
seeds in their stockings in 3 or 4 damp paper towels, put the whole
thing in a plastic bag and into the fridge.

When they spent the winter outdoors, temperature and moisture were too
variable (probably frozen just as they were starting to sprout and/or
too dry/too hot at the wrong time). Most difference now seems to be due
to parents and maybe season - weather while the pods were growing?.

Second generation seedling crosses this year are germinating <much> too
well! What the heck am I going to do with all these babies? 100%
germination already from one cross with 50 seeds.

Up early to drive down to Hiwassee Refuge and (hopefully) see this
year's batch of baby Whooping Cranes and their ultralite airplane
"mamas" off on another leg of their journey south to Florida.
