Re;Hybridizing White
There are several ways to remove anthocyanin from iris flowers.
Of course this will result in pink or yellow or orange , unless the cartenoid pigments are not also removed.
The recessive reduction of anthocyanin is the form present in diploids, and is also present in tetraploids. It is called Recessive Reduction of anthocyanin , because it is just that, a reduction of anthocyanin, not a complete removal of anthocyanin. The more modern forms are generally cleaner in colour then the older varieties such as Taja Mahal.
The dominant reduction of anthocyanin is often called I, standing for Inhibitor of anthocyanin. Again, a reduction of anthocyanion, although does a better job of removing anthocyanin then the RDA gene. It is not found in the diploid iris, such as Taj Mahal.
The glaciata genes, part of the plicata alleleic series, and a recessive. This one is the best reducer of anthocyanin, and to the naked eye there is no anthocyanin on the flower. Some exceptions to this with the Celstar pattern , where there can be some anthocyanin on bottom of the falls. Found in diploids as well as tetraploids.
There still is some anthocyanin present in all the types, even the glaciatas. This can be seen in a scientific pigment analysis.
The small amount of anthocyanin present in the flower is what gives us the "White" appearance, as without it the flower would look yellowish. This is also the secret of super whites in washing clothes. A bluing agent is put in. It is part of a visual affect, and a measure of light reflection would show you that the yellowish "white" flowers actually reflect more light then the snow white flowers.
Anyone who doubts all this should check "World of Iris" chapter on genetics and the pigment analysis on pg 425, check Elsa Sass, a glaciata, it has delphinidin, the iris anthocyanin in its analysis
