Basically, it would be a dedicated mailing list; probably 
iris-photos@hort.net.

People would send photos to the list like they do now, but instead of 
sending out the photo in each message, it would store it on the hort.net
server and would change the message to link there instead.

The image would still look like it was inline, but it would download the
image when you read the message instead of sending it out via email.  The
advantage is that people read email at different rates, so the load is
distributed.  When email is sent, it's all sent out at once and puts a huge
load on the system.

It's the same method that I used for the Heronswood newsletters when I 
managed their site.  I could convert one of the current iris-photos
messages to that format and send it, but I don't know to whom it should
be sent.   

Or, as you mention, Yahoo! might get their act together and things will
work better later.  Every site has problems -- hort.net had a pretty nasty
time this summer for example.
