Lee, sounds like you have the right stuff to jump in and start hybridizing too <g>. Join the fun!
I checked the online registry, and there are 20 irises registered from IMMORTALITY, 9 from BROTHER CARL, 33 from I DO, 10 from ENGLISH COTTAGE. As you said, some of these perform better some places than others. IMMORTALITY was difficult to get established here in the 'vale of despair', but is now a reliable grower and, with lots of mulch, manure, and extra water, is becoming a more reliable bloomer.
In the 98 rebloom checklist, IMMORTALITY is reported to rebloom in 30 US states plus 5 additional countries/Canadian Provinces, USDA zones 3 thru 10; BRO CARL - 25 locations, zones 4 thru 9; I DO - 24 locations, zones 4 thru 9; and ENGLISH COTTAGE - 26 locations, zones 5 thru 9.
So, IMM may be more adaptable to different climates (or it may just be reporting differences).
Of these four, ENGLISH COTTAGE is by far the healthiest, strongest plant here. Also the most likely not to bloom here because it is <not> daylength independent and tends to be frozen out spring and fall. IMM is next, I DO next, and I <think> BROTHER CARL died - will have to check.
I'm not positive this is right, but somewhere I got the impression that IMMORTALITY may not have quite as many sets of white genes of all types as I DO and BRO CARL. If true, that makes it more appealing as a parent.
I have noticed that many of you use Immortality(Zurbrigg 1982(I Do x English Cottage)). I have never made a cross but I still like to read about all of your efforts. Dr. Zurbrigg registered another white iris the year after Immortality. Brother Carl(Zurbrigg 1983(Sister Helen x I Do)) in my garden is almost identical to Immortality. When I first got Brother Carl I thought is was Immortality but I soon noticed that it reblooms much more often and increases much faster than Immortality. I am in zone 7 and I know that different iris do better or not so good based on the location they are grown in. In my location Brother Carl is much the superior iris. I am assuming that both got the continious bloom from I Do. Lee Mincy
