Re: Re: HYB: Substance

why count on Returning Chameleon for getting pink sdlgs?
It's not because Pink Sleigh is the parent that it should give good pinks

May be it's yellow can be married to a RE like Tea Leaves that's got an awful colour of green bamboo yellow, or Lemon Up that's got pinks in it's past but whose mother is Eastertime and grandad Mandoline?

We must listen to Betty when she says the pinks it gives are no good and I'm sure Ret. Cham. can do better.

LOL - understatement of the year <g>

It is difficult to get all the required characteristics to merge into one iris.

Of all the crosses I've made so far, SEAKIST seems to pass along good substance at a higher rate than anything else I've been able to try here.

Should be a lot of seedlings to choose from next year - some crosses were just attempts to get seedlings with good pollen production and width, others for substance and width. HARVEST OF MEMORIES X TREASURED seedlings look really strong, as do ABOVE THE CLOUDS X ROMANTIC EVENING.

In another couple of years, I may have enough acceptible lines going to be able to start hybridizing for real! <g>

Thanks for the info Betty. Your comments about lack of fall bloom due to early fall freezes is a good reminder for me of <why> I only want the everbloomers. I think I will try to pot up RETURNING CHAMELEON and see if I can get it to make some pollen. From what you've said, it sounds like she's a typical IMMORTALITY seedling - prone to produce mostly compost, but with half pink and good bloom size, probably worth a try or two.
