Re: REF: program suggestions

Great idea.? I think the AIS should record some of the hybridizers presentations and make the audito tapes and the slides/presentations available as programs from the AIS.? Maybe somebody with a video camera can record the programs?

First, let me say that I do not belong to a local iris group. Second, I
do not belong to the AIS. I am just a schmuck that likes iris.

However, from the other side of the coin, I have been pretty active in
the aquarium hobby for many years. There are a number of national and
regional groups that do just as you suggest. They have slide and video
programs available to members and/or member clubs covering the topics
they specialize in, or general topics in the case of unspecialized
regional groups. These are rented for a nominal fee, and can easily fill
a gap in a club's speaker schedule, so long as enough time is given to
get the material. Generally, it works quite well. Most of the programs
are top notch along with the visual materials that accompany them. In
the case of slide shows, sometimes a tape of someone speaking is
provided, and in other cases, someone gets to read a script written for
the slide program.

One of the national groups has a speaker program where top notch
speakers are available, with part of the cost of getting them to the
meeting is underwritten by a manufacturer of aquarium products. The also
used to be, meaning I do not know the current status, a manufacturer
that did this on their own, providing speakers on a number of topics,
underwriting part of the cost of getting them to the meeting site. These
programs were godsend for some groups, allowing them to bring in name
speakers at a reduced cost. This may be another avenue that the AIS
might want to explore to provide top notch speakers to local groups.

Listening to all the email chatter out there about presentations, it
seems
like a lot of people including me have developed programs for their
clubs. It
is too bad there is not a place where clubs can preview these
presentations
(if the programs are on the computer) and borrow them. Maybe the AIS
can set
something up. If you want the presentations, then you can send AIS
$10. I
will never create a program on Siberian or Japanese Irises. They don't
grow
well in my part of the world (southern NM). Yet it might be nice to
see a
powerpoint presentation. Similarly, Arilbreds are probably foreign to
Canada.

Here is a list of powerpoint presentations I have created. Of course
it
requires a lap top, projector and screen to display for the club. Most
are on
MVIS web site _www.zianet.com/mvis_ (http://www.zianet.com/mvis) but
the
pictures are grainy in order that they download as fast as possible.

Most people don't grow irises in the desert. However, most slides are
valid.

During the AIS Region 23 meeting, we showed a presentation called "Are
You
and Iris Fan, Fancier or Fanatic?" There wasn't a single iris picture,

however, people were laughing until they cried. Everyone was
encouraged to tell
stories. It took about 1 1/2 hours. I was going to offer it to the
AIS for a
program, but I never got around to it.

Also during the AIS Region 23 meeting, we played Iris Bingo using the
Dykes
Medal Winners as buzzwords. We also showed a picture to match the
buzzword.
I.e instead of calling out "N5", "Dusky Challenger" would be called and
a
picture displayed. I developed software to create the cards with the
Iris
names. I was going to offer the program to the AIS, however, I need to
get
permission from the World Iris Society for use of their Dykes pictures.
