Re: OT: Fall

We enjoy hearing from you, too, Francelle. For my part, I feel it's ok to get a little wordy once in a while when the list traffic is down. Temps here have been colder than forecast for the last few days, and the plants have gone on "hold" till things warm up a bit. So far, we've just missed freezes, but heavy frost on the windshield has made me antsy. The SDBs just shrug it off and bloom anyhow, but the TBs play it safe. At this rate, if no freezes, there should be irises on the table for Thanksgiving.

The thought just struck me, what a blessing our rebloomers are. I was on the way to visit a friend who is terminally ill day before yesterday, when I remembered a particular seedling blooming in the garden. I went back, cut it and put it in a vase. It will brighten her room for several days.

My seedlings are introduced through Winterberry Gardens, Francelle. Don and Ginny Spoon put out a nice catalogue, but they're satisfied with their current level of business, so have opted not to put it on line. If you contact them at vspoon@aol.com, they'll send you a catalogue. I've been thinking about running an ad in the Bulletin to give some of the introductions a bit more exposure. -- Griff

I really enjoy the environmental descriptions I get occasionally from you
and Linda. We had a brief shower here yesterday, less than .10 of an inch
but the only moisture we have seen since August. I spent Saturday watering
all the plantings I did a week ago. Some of the shoots are starting to
grow. Autumn Circus is blooming, the only rebloom so far. I have to go
cut it before the birds get it. The last four days have had temperatures in the 70s, night time temperatures in the 50s. Highs are predicted to go back
to the 80s in a couple of days. The new plantings put down roots better
when the ground is warm.
Griff, where can I buy your seedlings? I would love to have a catalog I
could order them from.

It's Indian summer here along the Potomac. Days in the 60s and nights a
little chilly. Great working weather. The leaves held, for the most part,
until yesterday, and today have begun raining down. The colors came late,
it
seemed, but they were worth waiting for. The spectaculars this year weren't
the reds, as is the norm, but a glory of golds and oranges set off by the
deep
green of firs and hollys. Meantime, the rebloomers keep nudging their way
up
-- some dark color showing on 07Y1, an 'Eternal Bliss' X 'Alleluia'
seedling
that first bloomed this spring. Didn't get a good photo of it then. Have
been baking dirt for seed planting -- close to a month behind schedule.
Although we officially made it out of the drought a couple of months ago,
it's
pretty dry again, and I think the rebloomers would appreciate some more
rain.
Roses are prospering everywhere. Yellow roses have always been my
favorites,
but for years each yellow that I planted failed. I finally succeeded,
however, and the house is full of fragrance. -- Griff
