Hi Linda, Unless I'm covering a large hoophouse (the biggest is about 20' x 32'), I usually go with a medium weight cover. They let in enough water and light that I can usually leave them over the peppers and tomatoes till daytime temps hit 80 degrees. Plan on only about 4 degrees protection, though. I rarely use any row cover without a support but mine are easy to put in and take out. 5' lengths of pvc bent into an arch with the ends slipped over 18" pieces of rebar pounded into the soil keep the maximum amount of airspace around the plants. The medium weights work well for most applications. If I'm serious about protecting plants from frost, a double covering of the medium weights works as well or better than a single layer of the heavy stuff. My favorite cover was a medium weight polypro reinforced with nylon threads every 1/2". Haven't been able to find it lately from any of the suppliers in years.
