Also, I can get at least two years use out of them before they start to crack on the edges and make hard to handle.

Also, depending on when you are translpnating and how long you plan to hold them in the plug tray will determine the type/size of plug tray you use. Anything smaller than 288 cells is too samll for Iris and some of the bigger ones have a lot of plastic space between cells so they are a waste of space in my opinion if you are growing a lot of seedlings.

I would definately use them with the drip trays to help protect the little roots forming in the bottom and makes them easier to carry and not dry out as much (and less quickly). The faster drying of the soil promotes more root growth but requires you to be more attentive to their needs (corners and edges). However, Iris seem to handle the drying out very well or at least better than most plants you could grow in them.

I would also recommend a light disinfecting wash between uses as with any pot you reus.

I trick I like to use on them when growing the seedlings to save space and trays is to use a white marker to marker to divde the rows up so I don't get the seedling lines mixed up.

Also, be sure to fill each cell with your potting soil as uniformly as possible. This will help ensure more even drying out. Its a lot like growing multiple rows of pots, just on a smaller scale. You will still have to water an individual plant repeatedly just because it grows more vigorously. But if one is that large you can remove it later and replant it in a regular larger pot on its own.

>>Soil plugs are really only usefule if you get near 100% germination. Even then germ will be erratic as we all know. Empty cells and seedlings growing at different rates and sizes will cause some plugs to stay wetter than others and invite fungus gnats = disaster for your survival rate.
