Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2012 11:30:37 -0500 (EST) From: HowieDash@aol.com To: jpreilly@zianet.com They have turned yellow over time. It is on more than one cross and not every plant in those crosses. Even the increase is yellow on a couple of them. My suspicion is there is something missing in the soil. I'm actually growing in two places. At my house I'm either growing in a soil/compost mix or a soil/sand/compost mix. The seedlings that I didn't have space for in the other location I'm growing in pots. None of them have turned yellow and they are growing well, though not as well as the ones in the ground. In my other location I'm growing in native soil, which is mostly clay. My suspicion is the soil is lacking something the plants need. Yesterday I watered them with BR-61 and supplemental zinc. The owner of the farm seems to think that is what is missing, because he sprays his pecan trees with the zinc. To me it seems like an iron deficiency but I just don't know. Especially if they have always been yellow. If it is named varieties then a different story. There are different patterns of chlorosis (leaves turning yellow). A good picture would help. Otherwise need a description. Does it start on old leaves or new leaves. Is in veins or between veins? From base out or from center of leaves out? Also any information on what treatments he has done to soil. Each problem has it's own symptoms. A friend of mine has a problem with his irises. He emailed the following to me. "I haven't joined Hort.net yet (maybe I should) and I have a question about my iris seedlings at Wes's. Some of the plants the leaves are almost yellow on the whole plant like I am missing something that makes the chlorophyll. My guess is iron, but I'm not sure. What do I need to add to fix the problem? I'm growing on clay soil here in the valley." Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email tomajordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email tomajordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS
