The mention of I. aphylla leads me to comment on a variant of it. Nudicaulis (Hook, J.D. collected 1869) a variant of I. aphylla. Don't know where collected. Rather surprising to me it was one the better performers in the TX study. The TX study was in a zone 8 place so not remarkable in the vernalization matter I guess. Within expected threshold for I. aphylla? The description by Hooker implied it blooms about 12 inches or so that would make it a horticultural SDB, no? Genetically it is 2n=48. Is the rule of thumb about SDB's not doing well in hot climates for TB x MDB crosses? Tetraploids may not adhere to the rule of thumb?

For information purposes. I have taken aphylla that went into dormancy and maintained them at temperatures above vernaliztion over winter indoors under lights. they remained dormant. In spring I planted them back outside. They remained dormant all summer and eventually died.Chuck Chapman
