Here on the border between 7a and 7b, I lost plants of I. japonica only
when I covered them for the winter. They have withstood temperatures near
zero without protection, but the above ground parts were killed. Our low
so far this year has been 18 degrees and I don't see any clear signs of
foliage damage so far on either the plain or variegated variety.
Can anyone provide experience of I. minutoaurea? I have this from two
sources (one in North Carolina and the other in California) but it has
never bloomed, despite good foliage growth. Brian Matthew speaks of a
rarely blooming, dwarf Acorus clone that was "making the rounds" labelled
as Iris minutoaurea in Europe. Could it have come over here? The foliage
of my two plants is not very iris-like, with a distinct midrib (like
Acorus).
Best wishes, Bill
