virginica in Maryland

Rodney stated:-
A person who had visited the No. Am. Native Iris web site had this
comment: "I live in Maryland, and I have a book called "finding
wildflowers
in the Washington D.C. -baltimore area" and it lists Iris cristata,
verna,
versicolor, and virginica as all living in my area.

Can anyone on the list confirm the presence of these irises in MD? I
seem to remember from our previous discussions that virginica var.
virginica was not found that far north.

the US Government website

http://trident.ftc.nrcs.usda.gov/plants/plntmenu.html

lists virginica from Maryland. When I asked them for some details on
the distribution of virginica further south, they said that their
information was obtained, or maintained, by a botanist at Duke
University. I have forgotten his name but if you use the direct link on
the USDA website, they will provide the info in about 24 hours. I
contacted Duke but did not receive a reply and have not followed up with
a telephone call.

Ian, in Ottawa where it remains mild and gardening is still possible.
