When we lived in Houston, it was a constant struggle growing bearded
iris. We had to cut down 80ft pines to get sunlight to them, raise the
beds for drainage, use lime in the soil to ammend the acidic soil. That
left the problem of heat and moisture, which we had plenty of both! A
lot of plants just plain steam cooked in the beds. And I don't want to
leave out fireants that loved to make thier mounds around the base of
iris clumps! We started with 200 different varieties and after four
years left with about 75 varieties. The rebloomers didn't suffer as much
as the one timers. I'm sure it's because they increase much faster and
require more water, in most other regions, than one timers. One iris
that seemed to thrive under these conditions was Vanity. We had a huge
clump of it when we moved. Our rebloomers did rebloom well. We did have
to cover them a couple times, but not often.
Leslie Jobe' In Omaha. We just got back from Texas. The snow was gone
when we got home, but there is still a lot of homes without power.
