Caught That Gopher!

Dear Friends on the List,
It is amazing what damage one little gopher can do. We had one that would
come out of his tunnels and feast on iris leaves. He was wiping out whole
plants in one meal. This one didn't bother with the rhizome; he delighted
in the crunchy greens.
Well, Steve got him last night. He tried a new method. Usually he goes
to great lengths to put in the trap just right, cover the hole with a piece
of wood, and finally cover the whole operation with a lot of dirt. The
dogs usually make a mess of this situation so he decided to simply put the
trap into the tunnel and leave it uncovered. Previously, we didn't think
we could trick one into the trap if light was filling his passage.
Needless to say, this is the easier way and it seems to work. Now the dogs
have nothing to dig for, and they just pull up the trap when it has an
occupant.
I really do hate killing them, but how can this be iris heaven with the
little demons destroying our angels?
