Graham,

My dictionary defines garnet (the color) as "deep red" and lake (the color)
as "a dark red pigment derived from cochineal". It sounds to me like a deep
(iris) red on the violet side.

There is a color photo of CUM LAUDE on page 44 of the January, 1986 AIS
Bulletin.
