Pine needles

Griff,

I allow the ground to become solid with a preferable accumulation of
snow. Then I like to put pine boughs over the whole iris bed, rather
than needles. Don't know if this makes a real difference, that's just
how I've always done it. We don't get killer cold here, just heavy, wet
snow accumulation.

Regarding pine needles in general - remember that they are acidic and
so this may contribute to germination issues with seeds etc. We love the
acidity here, because our soils are so alkaline.
