. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to develop a bog

William,
Hi! We used to live in Houston (north of Jersey Village, off of Jones
road Off of Cypress N.Houston) We had a pond in the yard. We had to have
raised bed for most everything else. We did not have a bog garden there.
But we did have one in Roswell New Mexico, alongside our pond.
We dug down two foot and lined the area with black plastic, then we
mixed peat, and sterilized manure with the sandy soil we had removed and
refilled the hole. We grew Louisianas,Japanese,I.fulva and Pseudacorus.
In Houston we had sandy soil and we had lots of Pine and Oak trees also.
I would probably go about making a bog garden there the same as I did in
Roswell, except I would take advantage of the pine needles and oak leaves
for the acid loving Iris. If you plan to grow bearded iris, then you
need to make raised beds, add lime, and make sure they get LOTS of
sunshine.
Keep them high and dry!! They will get plenty of natural moisture and
you don't need to worry about watering. We cut down seven 80ft pines to
let in light. I would suggest you visit Mercer Arboretum on
Aldine-Westfield Rd. (talk to Linda Gay) They have beautiful Louisiana
Iris beds around a huge pond. The staff there will be glad to help you
plan yours and give you suggestions. Their phone # is 443-8731 Tell
Linda I sent you.
