Yes, I am in Zone 3a and it gets down to -42 F. here (that is the
lowest I have personally seen it on my outside thermometer). We have
lots and lots of snow cover starting in October and it is still here
in the beginning of May. (usually) We have about 18" now and it
is here for the duration.
The folks in Zone 4 are telling the list that they might see some
melt to finish the garden chores....not us - didn't plant my
Siberian seeds so will start some inside like the rest of the
world this winter. :-(
Kathy, I have had good luck with SIs from many places and various
hybridizers. Anna Mae Miller's, Robert Hollingworth's, both from
Michigan, along with Currier McEwen's from Maine always do excep-
tionally well here but so do Varner's and others including the
older ones like Caesar's Brother.
I have come to the conclusion that it is the supplier and the
condition of the plants that is more important than where it was
hybridized and got its start. I know this might be heresy to some
but I grow Standard Dward Bearded that were hybridized in CA and
they do well here. Case in point, REFINED by Weiler in Fresno, CA
purchased from Lowell Baumunk in Colorado. Also have some medians
and TBs that were hybridized in a drier and warmer climate than we
are...but what isn't? ;-)
I have lost 2 Siberians in the years I have been growing them...
and they both came from Borbeleta's in Minnesota....I still don't
know why they didn't make it.
The fact that they came from the same place is probably a
coincidence.
If you want a list of SIs that do exceptionally well here, the short
list would include: INDY, LADY VANESSA, BUTTER & SUGAR, ESTHER CDM,
HARPSWELL HAPPINESS, LIBERTY HILLS, LILTING LAURA, PEG EDWARDS,
MESA
PEARL, ILLINI ENCORE (repeat blooms here), SKY WINGS and, of course,
CAESAR'S BROTHER. 12 Siberians with 9 different hybridizers from
different regions.
Cheers,
Ellen
