<< A lady in a snail mail Robin mentioned that Dr. Horinaka of Japan was
working with numerous types of Iris setosa, including some that might have
variegated foliage. Are any of you all familiar with this? >>
Coincidentally, I have been working on a request for information from Dr.
Horinaka who is seeking a variegated setosa. I have recently discussed the
matter at some length with Dr. James Waddick and with Clarence Mahan and we
are agreed that the setosa Horinaka is seeking is not that one mentioned by
Kohlein (p 155) as a form of I.setosa candensis with horizontal banding on
the leaves, but rather that one reproduced in the January 1997 AIS Bulletin.
This seedling, which is apparently being trialed at Joe-Pye Weed gardens, is
not proving to be a strong grower. Variegated seedlings appear in many
species from time to time, but it is one thing to have a variegated seedling
or sport, and another to have one which is a viable plant. Dr.Waddick, who
has great interest in species irises and in variegated plants is not very
excited about this one, nor does he know of another at this time.
Dr. Horinaka may have developed variegated setosas of his own, but we have
not heard of this. We have only heard of his interest in one on this
continent.
