Mulch

From: Irisborer@aol.com

At the iris program given by David Schreiner last weekend, I was astounded to
learn that Schreiners mulch irises with soil in the fall. They use large
machinery to throw soil from between the rows over the irises, which is
removed in the spring.

So my question is...... how can we replicate this without soil? Does anyone
here use a mulch on their irises?? I wonder if pine straw would work?? Seems
like peat moss would be too moist.... but then, there's nothing moister than
snow - and that's the alternative here in the Buffalo 'burbs.

I'd be interested to hear opinions..... this is for bearded irises.....
