I've wondered about this too. I have a wide assortment of plants in my
garden, as well as letting the weeds grow (until they get too out of
control anyway). And I've never had a problem with pests on any of my
garden plants...with the exception of leaf miner on my columbine. I've
wondered if all those various plants provide for homes for enough
beneficial critters that they keep the pests under control for me.
Either that, or I just have really great luck in not having pest problems.
