Hi all,
It's Melbourne Cup day holiday here in Australia, and I'm spending my
free time chatting instead of gardening.
I did a pod count this morning and have 35 pods containing potential
SDB's and IB's, only one of these pods is on a TB plant. Not a single TB
cross set yet (from the many done, including many TB-SDB crosses). I
think this is partly due to the rain/humidity/frost etc. that we have
had in October, and I'm hoping that some of the more recent crosses will
set.
Frost has caused droplets of moisture to form under the outside skin of
some of the larger pods, and I have 'popped' these bubbles to allow
drainage, and hopefully prevent rot.
I have discovered that I can only get dry, viable looking pollen from
some flowers, by forcing the buds open early. I thought the pollen was
usually at it's best after the flower has opened.
I'm also very thrilled to have set pods from two particular crosses:
MAGIC CHILD (IB) X CELCIUS (SDBxIB)
MAGIC CHILD (IB) X SILK DEGREES (TB)
MC is a Blyth IB which I thought would be sterile, and Celcius is from
Zing me, and has a mixture of SDB and TB 'blood' (or should I say Sap?)
I'm looking forward to growing these, but must remember not to count my
seedlings before they bloom!
Cheers, Jan Clark, (The pollenating Fairy) in Australia
