In a message dated 98-11-02 19:40:30 EST, you write:
<< "Standards chartreuse to lime, white inside and styles; falls golden olive
green, deeper center, and brown (gold?) beards." Certainly unique from the
sound of it. >>
BAYBERRY CANDLE is an interesting and rather good looking iris of a sort of
tarnished brass color, but I must say the description above confers nuances on
it that I don't recall ever being struck by when I have seen it.
Catalog descriptions--and often the AIS registration description they
reproduce--vary a lot in their resemblance to reality. Some are essentially a
form of plant pornography which may engender a mental picture that will be a
hard act for the iris to follow. Which is not to say anyone should not
thoroughly enjoy these descriptions----that is what they are for, after
all---but it is good to pause occasionally and remember this, especially when
dealing with the offbeat stuff, or, as I like to think of them, irises
composed in a minor key.
Another rather good little iris in this same type of bronzey color is SHAMPOO
(Messick '77) an IB blooming at about 18".
